INTERVIEW - Willy Le Bon won the Porthos Tournament in épée last year. He shared his impressions of the competition with us.

What was your training club, and where do you train today?
I started fencing at the age of 5 at the Cercle d'Escrime de Saint-Gratien, where I still train once or twice a week.
How do you balance fencing and school?
School remains my priority. I dedicate time to sports, and when I’m training, I give it my all.
What made you start fencing?
I chose fencing for its uniqueness. I felt it was a sport that suited me because it requires focus, strategy, technique, and speed.
And what made you want to continue practicing?
My early performances and results, along with a certain ease at the beginning, made me want to keep practicing.
What do you think of the Porthos tournament, and how did you feel about your victory?
It’s a very stimulating competition. When I won, I felt a sense of pride because I realized I was finally capable of achieving something beautiful.
Do you think luck plays a role in the Porthos tournament?
If there’s a part of luck, it’s not the only factor in winning the Porthos Tournament. You also need to be strategic, manage the time effectively, and maintain a precise action in mind.
Would you be willing to defend your title in your current category?
Without hesitation!
What is the main goal of your season, and what are your longer-term ambitions?
I’m reflecting on the future—whether to continue in another club or even stop if I don’t find that extra spark to achieve a significant result this year, like finishing at least in the final four. It’s difficult because I see some of my peers growing in maturity thanks to close coaching and guidance, whereas I feel like I’m stagnating even though I believe I have the potential to reach higher. Many people tell me this, but unfortunately, the quality of the training I receive doesn’t allow me to elevate my level.
