INTERVIEW - Maxime Galy (licensed at Masque de Fer Lyon) won the Porthos Tournament in 2014.

What was your training club, and where do you train today?
I started fencing in Saint-Doulchard (Cher) at the age of 7, and I now train at Masque de Fer in Lyon, two to three times a week.
Who is your current coach? And your previous ones?
My current coach is Nicolas BEAUDAN (Masque de Fer, Lyon). Previously, it was Annick BOUQUIN from Gleize, Jean-Paul MATHIEU from MBE Cholet, and at the very beginning, Marianne JACQUELIN from Saint-Doulchard.
How do you balance fencing and school?
Since this year, I’ve been attending a high school with a flexible schedule.
What made you start fencing?
Even as a small child, I loved sword fighting and watching the Olympics on TV!
And what made you want to continue practicing?
The love for this sport, as well as the desire to win and bring back medals!
What do you think of the Porthos tournament, and how did you feel about your victory?
It’s exciting! This tournament is different from other competitions I’ve participated in. When I won, my first thought was, “FINALLY!” because it was my first victory, and then my friends came to congratulate me.
Do you think luck plays a role in the Porthos tournament?
Luck plays a role, but preparation for the touch is the most important thing.
Would you be willing to defend your title in your current category?
Without hesitation!
Have you won other competitions since Porthos? If so, which ones?
Yes, I won the Men's Minimes Regional Championships. I also finished 3rd in the team event at the French Championships.
What is the main goal of your season, and what are your longer-term ambitions?
This year, my goal is to participate in the French National Championships (N1). In the long term, I’d like to join the French National Team.
